Why I don't Wear a Wig

Jun 21, 2026 Sorrell Kropf

I need to specify this first: I have nothing against anyone who wears a wig. I am wearing a wig in the picture in this blog post, and it's the same wig I wear when I do the 4 Gardeners series on my garden channel (Soils with Sorrell). I am simply explaining why I prefer a tichel over a wig.

I got laser hair removal on my legs and underarms many years ago. It was awesome. I loved it, and it freed me from two things the hair was symbolizing:

  1. A connection to what I thought was a gross body (pale skin and thick black hair)
  2. A biological connection to someone who will remain nameless.

I had the type of thick hair that would prick through pants. It was hard to shave, came back quickly, and felt disgusting to me. I was getting repulsed by myself and covered my body a lot so no one would see it. It carried a lot of shame.

The laser hair removal made me feel gorgeous and free from my body. I could touch my ankles without feeling ashamed. I could wear short-sleeve shirts without feeling embarrassed. I didn't have to shave what felt like a porcupine off my pale British legs.

Fast forward a few years, and I started covering my hair. I had people suggest I should wear a wig, but I did not by any means want to put hair back on my body. What I am about to say is gross, so consider this your trigger warning: to me, putting a wig on with real human hair is like someone shaving their legs and giving it to you to wear on your legs.

This is not to shame anyone who wears a wig - I completely respect your decision to do so. I recently purchased a few wigs with fake hair for upcoming fashion shows and videos.

But the real hair wigs? Not for me. I love my tichels, and I love the feeling of a light blanket covering my head :) Maybe I'll change my mind in the future, but for now I'll stick with tichels.
