It's no joke that Phoenix summers are hot and unbearable. I managed to cover my hair all summer long WHILE wearing a shaper.
We had several days that reached 116 degrees, and I still covered my hair.
You might be thinking that I'm crazy and/or could have given myself an exception to covering when it's that hot out.
Believe me, there were times I thought about taking my tichel off and saying screw it.
But two things reminded me how much I value covering my hair, and I wanted to share them with you.
First, I feel completely naked without a tichel. It's been years since I started covering, and when I don't wear a tichel, I feel like something is missing. It's become as habitual as putting on a shirt or brushing my teeth. Physically, mentally, and spiritually, I feel naked without it.
Second, keeping this mitzvah brings me closer to Hashem. I believe he wouldn't be mad if I took my tichel off when it's 116 out, but I promised myself, my marriage, and him that I will do this mitzvah every day. The more I keep my promise, the more solidified it becomes.
Now I will say....drumroll.......I do give myself some leeway when it comes to this heat. I will wear short sleeves, tank tops, or knee shorts when doing homesteading work or going to a farm supply store.
Why? Because I sweat A LOT, and working in the garden can mean getting poked, pricked, or bitten by a number of things, and I don't want that hiding under my clothes.
And when I'm working outside in the summer, my body needs to breathe, or else I will collapse and get dangerously overheated.
Also, everyone here sweats A LOT in this heat.
Believe me, no one out here looks their best in 116 degrees, so we all give ourselves a pass when it comes to sweat and clothing lol.
Could you do it? Do you think you could cover your hair in 116 degrees?
