A Tichel Mishap

Well, this isn't going to be easy to admit, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's had this happen.

Last week I fell ill and was in pajamas all day. I threw my back out, and I got a case of food poisoning. This combination led to a no-care-given, pajama-wearing, survival-mode type of day. I wasn't going to leave the house, so only my husband and I saw the train wreck of a woman I looked like.

Later that night, I had a Zoom meeting with the president of my shul to discuss an important issue I've been concerned about. I've known him for years, and we're good friends. I sat down at my computer, entered the Zoom meeting, and we began talking. After about 2 minutes, I noticed it....

Ladies and gentlemen....

To my horror......

I realized I wasn't wearing a tichel.

I was shocked. I am so good at covering my hair. I never miss. But this time, I missed the mark so bad I might as well have shot the other direction.

He was very kind and considerate and asked if I wanted to go put on a tichel, but at this point, I felt like it didn't matter. Every part of my hurting, recovering body just wanted to lie down, so adding my hair blunder to the mix didn't make anything better.

After the meeting, I needed to approach myself with grace. I needed to be the friend who told me I'm OK, that it was a mistake, and that nothing bad was going to happen because of this.

I reminded myself that at the end of the day, I am my longest commitment, so I'd better make myself a nice place to be. This means forgiveness, allowing myself to sit with the uncomfortable embarrassment so I can smile at it instead of feeling shame, and to accept that I made a mistake.

Has this happened to you? Have you ever forgotten your tichel? Let me know below.

Love the tichel I'm wearing? It's the Candy and it's my Darker and Bolder collection!
